Operation Ballesteros Update: OH SHIT IT'S ON, says EC!

Many of you may remember a very old news item we posted on a so-called Chris Ballesteros '12, who thought he could beat the pack by causing a false start at this September or whatever's UC rep elections. Upon first hearing about this engagement, which we are resisting the temptation to label "Overenthusiastic-Freshman-Gate" out of hatred for cliches, we first thought- "wow, it's people like that who make all the world hate Harvard". We then thought, "Hey, wait a minute- isn't there a specific window in which you're allowed to campaign, and not a second before that or you get scolded or chastised or something?" Well, a little bit of research within the UC archives has answered our question: YES, it is a campaign violation, subject to review by the UC Election Commission, current lead by Steven V. Cupps '09. Here's the official law, straight out of the rulebook:

3.5 Time of Campaigning. A candidate may begin active campaigning upon the
certification of all candidates, which shall occur at 12:00 PM on Thursday, September 27, 2007 unless the Election Commission takes specific action to the contrary. For the purpose of this rule, "active campaigning" shall be defined as the public posting, distribution, or exposition of any material, physical or electronic, intended to garner support for a specific candidate, including discussion of the candidacy with any published media.
Whoops- looks like someone's political ambitions have just ended before this race even started!

Kind of funny that it's gossipgeek that breaks this story. I wondered if this could ever offer any real news items, after all that bullshit about geek singers and Bob Barr. Does the election comission know? This seems like a really cheap move on this guy's part and I totally think that he should be punished. Karl Rove tactic don't work here! Plus, the UC could do without another huge inflated ego.

Well, our intention was always to break real news as it develops, but mix up it with hilarious bullshit that mocks most people involved. The "bullshit" about Bob Barr and *Greek* singer Sakis Rouvas was just summer filler. Most college blogs like IvyGate et al either close for the summer or get assistant editors to take care of the slow work. Us? We just write random filler nonsense while the real news flows in.
